Teleflex Medical OEM has created an environment that enables higher levels of innovation and collaboration for the development of catheters.     Research indicates that 60% of a product’s cost is committed by the design phase.     Atlas Copco a développé une nouvelle pompe à vide à becs sèche qui vient compléter son portefeuille : la DZS. Idéale pour de nombreuses applications, des systèmes centraux dans les hôpitaux au transport pneumatique, en passant par le routage CNC ou les salles de traite. La DZS représente une solution fiable et durable. Basées sur la simplicité, les pompes à vide à becs offrent une technologie sèche et sans contact avec des performances et une efficacité énergétique élevées.

    Atlas Copco, la première entreprise à développer le compresseur multibec a fait l’acquisition d’Edwards (entreprise qui a introduit la technologie à becs pour les applications de vide dans l’industrie électronique). La mise en commun des connaissances et de l’expérience de ces deux entreprises a permis d’aboutir à une conception innovante et pionnière sur le marché pour développer des produits fiables et efficaces.

    Fabriquées selon les principes fondamentaux d’Atlas Copco en matière de conception de compresseurs, ces pompes sont équipées de matériaux de construction et de revêtements innovants. Avec les pompes à vide, la plupart des gaz sont aspirés par la pompe ; cela a pour conséquence d’entraîner des défaillances prématurées pouvant être catastrophique. Cependant, la DZS équipée de série de becs en acier inoxydable et d’un étage de compression résistant à la corrosion, assure un fonctionnement fiable même dans les conditions les plus difficiles.

    En cas de perturbations du processus, seule la dépose des becs permet de garantir un nettoyage complet : cela nécessite une resynchronisation des pignons, et un démontage du carter d’engrenages – une tâche coûteuse en temps. Néanmoins, la conception de la nouvelle DZS est dotée de becs amovibles, faciles à nettoyer, à étanchéifier et à remonter sans toucher à l’entraînement. Cela permet de réduire considérablement les coûts et le temps d’intervention. La conception modulaire de l’étage de compression, du carter d’engrenages et du silencieux permet d’obtenir une pompe facile à gérer pouvant être remplacée partiellement au lieu d’être entièrement mise au rebut en cas de panne majeure et/ou de perturbation du processus.

  • Atlas Copco Launches Efficient DZS Range of Dry Claw Vacuum Pumps, with Low Lifecycle Costs

    Atlas Copco has developed a new dry claw vacuum pump to add to their portfolio, the DZS. Suitable for many applications, from central systems in hospitals to pneumatic conveying, CNC routing or milking parlors – the DZS is a durable, reliable solution. Claw vacuum pumps offer non-contact and dry pumping chambers with high performance and power efficiency, based on simplicity.

    When Atlas Copco, the first company to innovate multi-claw technology for compressors, acquired Edwards, experienced at bringing claw technology to vacuum applications in the high tech electronics industry, the combined knowledge and experience of these two companies lead to innovative market leading design resulting in efficient and reliable products.

    Manufactured on the fundamentals of Atlas Copco compressor design, these pumps feature innovative construction materials and coatings.  With vacuum pumps most of the process gasses go through the pump; this has a tendency to cause premature failure which can be catastrophic. The DZS however features stainless steel claws and a corrosion resistant pumping chamber as standard – for reliable operation even in harsh conditions.

    After a process upset, unless you remove the claws a full clean cannot be guaranteed; removing the claws results in a retiming of the gears which in turn requires the gearbox to be stripped –a time consuming task. However, the new DZS design offers removable claws which are easy to clean, change seals and reassemble without touching the drivetrain, saving a massive amount of downtime and expense. The modular design of the pumping chamber, gearbox and silencer results in a simple to manage pump that can be partially replaced rather than wholly scrapped in the case of major failure due to process upsets.

  • New LCP Monofilament Allows for MRI Guided Vascular Intervention

    zeus-logoOrangeburg, SC – September 13, 2016 – Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field to image the body and is known as the gold standard in diagnostic imaging. This non-invasive imaging technique can be used to diagnose several medical conditions because of its superior ability to visualize soft tissue. Currently, however, vascular interventions such as cardiac ablation, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) rely on fluoroscopy (x-ray) as a means to visualize the procedure.  These interventions use catheters constructed of metals such as stainless steel to allow flexibility and kink resistance. Unlike MRI, procedures using x-ray expose patients and clinicians to ionizing radiation. With the ever-increasing interest in the development of an MRI-compatible intravascular catheter, Zeus Industrial Products Inc. (“Zeus”) recently announced the launch of their MRI-compatible LCP monofilament. This technology overcomes a significant limitation of other vascular visualization procedures and removes radiation exposure as a consequence. With exceptional tensile strength, LCP monofilament provides a safe braiding option for medical device manufactures aiming to capitalize on the benefits MRI provides to doctors and patients.

    LCPs – liquid crystal polymers – are thermoplastic resins that exhibit unique properties. These materials have many distinctive and desirable traits including exceptional mechanical strength, heat tolerance for autoclaving, and chemical inertness. LCP materials have found favor in many high performance applications from automotive and aerospace parts to electronic and medical devices.

    “Our proprietary extrusion process has produced a superior LCP monofilament with utilitarian properties for the medical device industry,” says Emily Barnes, global market manager, CRM/EP at Zeus. “LCP monofilament has all of the significant properties of LCPs but also provides excellent torque response, pushability, and kink resistance.” She goes on to note that because catheter based minimally invasive procedures have expanded into various medical disciplines, the potential applications for this LCP monofilament are broad. “Many of these applications where catheters are employed would benefit from our LCP monofilament” says Barnes.

    LCP monofilament is easily braided with industry-standard equipment. The fiber likewise displays less fraying (“bird nesting”) than comparable monofilament and multifilament fibers during the braiding process, resists kinking, and can be wound onto Steeger and Wardwell bobbins and DIN 160 spools. Class VI approved, LCP monofilament provides a means to eliminate metal catheter shafts; it is autoclavable and can be supplied with tight tolerances in customizable sizes and profiles.

    LCP monofilament will have its official launch at MD&M Minneapolis, September 21-22. Barnes and others from Zeus will be on-hand at the conference to answer questions.

    Compliant with the new 4th Edition of IEC60601-1-2:2014, the BM90 series meets the more severe EMC immunity requirements for Professional, Home enargy-power-bm90-universal-medical-blade-adapterHealthcare and Emergency Medical environments. Additionally, the products satisfy the new US Department of Energy LEVEL VI energy efficiency requirements with less than 200mW no load power consumption and average efficiencies from 89-92% on 12V output models and above.

    The BM90 series operates over a universal input voltage range of 90-264Vac with DC outputs available from 12 to 53.5Vdc. The BM90 series offers 9 standard output voltages, including 12, 15, 18, 19, 24, 28, 36, 48 and 53.5V options, with other custom options easily made available. The adapters are specified for operation up to 60°C with derating.

    A peak power rating of 135W for up to 1sec makes them particularly well suited for driving motors and pumps with highly capacitive and inductive loads, such as CPAP breathing devices and ventilators. Protection features includes OVP, OCP, OTP and short-circuit protection. All models have 4000V reinforced isolation and are IP22 waterproof rated.

    Like Enargy’s existing BM60 series, the BM90 products will be medically certified with 2xMOPP isolation; qualified to UL/IEC/EN60950-1, IEC60601-1, IEC/EN62368-1, GB4943, IEC 695-2-2 (UL94V-0) safety standards; and carry the CE and RoHS6 markings.

    The units are shipped with an IEC320-C8, 2-wire AC line cord. A choice of standard DC output cables include 3-pin, 4-pin or barrel jack connectors, with custom and other connectors available upon request. All models are now available for sampling, with full production planned in 4Q16.

    RRC Launches another Prismatic Semi-Smart Standard Battery Pack and Charger

    RRC has enhanced its standard battery pack series to include another single-cell prismatic Li-Ion battery. It is characterized by a slim and compact design with high energy density.

    The RRC1130 is a standard Li-Ion Smart Single Cell Pack with 3.8 V, 3880 mAh and 14.7 Wh. An important feature of the 1S1P design is the use of smart technology in combination with a prismatic Li-ion cell. The electronics contain a gas gauge and protection circuit, (monitors voltage, current and temperature). This data can be transferred via I²C interface between the battery and the application. The battery pack also includes worldwide approvals.

    A compatible battery charger also is available. The RRC-SCC1130 is a 5 Watt desktop charger that is custom tailored to the battery pack with comprehensive worldwide approvals.

  • Emerson Collaborates Branson Ultrasonic Amplitude Profiling™ Technology with EMD Millipore Providing a Delicate Solution for Medical Filtration Device

    Advanced Assembly Technology Helps Customer Bring Microfiltration Product to Market

    DANBURY, Conn., August 2016 –  Branson Ultrasonics Corp., a business of Emerson, has collaborated with EMD Millipore, the Life Science division of Merck KGaA of Germany, on delivering a high-frequency ultrasonic welding solution that enabled a medical parts manufacturer to bring a critical new microfiltration device to market. Branson will be demonstrating the 2000X 40 kHz Micro Actuator Welder showcasing Amplitude Profiling™ technology at MD&M Minneapolis, Booth # 2017.

    Branson worked with Millipore to overcome the challenge of bonding a delicate, 125µm thick PVDF membrane with 0.2-micron pores to PE housing for a medical parts maker to bring a new filtration device using Millipore’s advanced microfiltration membranes to market.

    Branson employed Amplitude Profiling™, using custom-tailored process parameters, tool and horn assembly using FEA (finite element analysis) to maximize the effectiveness of high frequency (40 kHz) ultrasonic welding, precisely matching weld specifications to the properties of materials being bonded. Amplitude Profiling™ provides many potential benefits for ultrasonic welding, including: increased weld strength, reduced part marking, minimize or eliminate damage caused by diaphraming, eliminate damage to delicate internal components, less flash and particulate.

    Branson provided technical support on modifying the product design for the Utah-based medical parts customer to use Millipore’s SureVent PVDF Membrane and achieve the 360° hermetic seal that is critical to ensure no leakage around the membrane.

    As a result of the collaboration, Millipore’s customer is able to produce more than a million of these parts per year with high process repeatability and reliability. By reducing the assembly time to seal the product, overall costs are lowered.

    “There’s a science and art to sealing or welding microfiltration membrane to plastic housing and configurations,” said Shawn Gaskell, Product Manager, Membrane Products, EMD Millipore Corp. “By working with Branson, we were able to overcome the challenge of sealing our membrane properly to their device, enabling the product launch to move forward.”

    Ultrasonic welding proved to be the best solution over heat or thermal sealing because excessive heat could melt or damage the membrane surface, due to the small size, shape and delicate nature of the medical device and material. While ultrasonic worked best for the weld, the customer was having difficulty getting the airtight seal needed until Branson optimized the tooling and assembly process, helping to deliver the total solution needed.

    Ultrasonic welding joins thermoplastics through the use of heat generated from high frequency mechanical motion or vibrations. The vibrations are created in a vertical direction; the heat is generated from the repeated collision of the materials.

    Located in Billerica, Mass., Gaskell turned to nearby Branson as a global technology leader after knowing of its reputation and attending a plastics joining educational program in Danbury, Conn. After seeing the synergies between the two leaders they began working together to solve the problems in sealing membranes.

    UBM Canon brings PBS Texas, TexasPack, and other trade shows to NRG Center, October 13-14

    Santa Monica, CA – September 14, 2015 – Powder & Bulk Solids (PBS) Texas, TexasPack, Design & Manufacturing Texas, ATX Texas, PLASTEC Texas, AeroCon, and Quality Expo will  bring hundreds of exhibitors to the NRG Center (formerly the Reliant Center), in Houston, Texas, October 13-14, 2015.

    Along with all of the many suppliers demonstrating their technologies and expertise, there will be free presentations on the Center Stage, including a Combustible Dust Explosion Demonstration by professionals from REMBE, a Powder and Bulk Solids jeopardy-style trivia game run by Andrés Orlando of Jenike & Johanson, and a demonstration and discussion of what 3D printing can do, by Samantha Snabes, founder of re:3D, inc. a company that specializes in large scale 3D printing.

    Local San Diego group joins UBM Canon’s medical technology conference and expo

    Santa Monica, CA – August 5, 2015. What do you get when you put a group of engineers and doctors in a room together? You get collaboration to design and build medical devices that are specifically what is needed in medicine. The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has gathered faculty from the School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Jacobs School of Engineering together to create the Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM) to translate creative ideas into clinical products.     New Materials and the Latest Techniques Explored at Javits Convention Center

    Santa Monica, CA, May 5, 2015 – 3D printing to personalize surgery is just one of the new techniques that will be covered in the upcoming 3D Printing Conferences at UBM Canon’s long-running East Coast advanced design and manufacturing event, June 9-11, 2015, at the Jacob K.     3D Printing for All Industries

    On Wednesday, June 10, leading off a day of “Innovations in 3D Printing,” Katie Weimer, Vice President, Medical Devices, Healthcare for 3D Systems Corporation, will present a keynote, in which she will discuss “3D Printing: Changing the Game in Healthcare.” She was responsible for developing Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) for the company, which allows surgeons to create 3D models to personalize the planning of surgeries, and she also has lead in the development of 3D anatomical modeling and advanced imaging techniques.

    Inventor of the Luke Arm Discusses Robotic Prostheses at the Event’s Center Stage

    Santa Monica, CA – April 29, 2015 – Dean Kamen, inventor and outspoken advocate for science and technology education, will speak on the robotic prosthesis, The Luke Arm, at the upcoming BIOMEDevice Boston event at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, May 6, 2015. Kamen will be the keynote speaker at the complimentary Center Stage in the expo hall. UBM Canon’s BIOMEDevice Boston is co-located with Design and Manufacturing New England, Electronics New England, PLASTEC New England, Quality Expo Showcase and ESC.     The Luke Arm, named after Luke Skywalker, was developed by Kamen and his team at DEKA Research and Development Corp., in Manchester, N.H. This prosthesis, also called the DEKA Arm System, received FDA approval last year. The FDA reports that this is the first approved prosthetic arm that “translates signals from a person’s muscles to perform complex tasks.” The arm allows its wearer multiple simultaneous movements and a delicate, controlled grip. Development of this prosthesis is part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program, Revolutionizing Prosthetics, to aide amputees, particularly the many veteran amputees.

    Canadian Organizations Offer Sessions at Toronto Event on the Latest Developments in Packaging

  • ASQ Quality Training Joins UBM Canon New York Trade Event

    Integrated Quality Management Workshop to be Offered with CEU Credits

    Santa Monica, CA (April 14, 2015) – ASQ, the American Society for Quality will present an intensive two-day training on Integrated Quality Management at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, June 10-11, 2015. The workshop will familiarize participants with the latest tools and techniques for monitoring and managing best practices in the workplace, and will assist attendees in developing a draft action plan to apply to their operations. The ASQ presentations will be held in conjunction with UBM Canon at their East Coast trade shows taking place at the same venue, June 9-11. The co-located exhibition and conference includes MD&M East, Atlantic Design & Manufacturing, EastPack, ATX East, PLASTEC East, HBA Global, and Quality Expo.   • Lifetime Achievement in Engineering to be Honored

    Design News to present multiple awards at Pacific Design & Manufacturing Event in February 2015

    Santa Monica, CA (January 28, 2015) – UBM Canon, the world’s leading advanced design and manufacturing industry resource, and Design News, will be announcing three major engineering awards, on February 10, 2015, in addition to their Golden Mousetrap Awards, a program that celebrates the companies, products, and people who are energizing North American design, engineering, and manufacturing.

    Babak Parviz will be honored for Lifetime Achievement, although, at age 40, Parviz still has years of achievement to come. The former professor at the University of Washington came to the world’s attention when, while working for Google, he developed Google Glass, and then the Smart Contact Lens, which can display the wearer’s blood glucose level. He started experimenting with contact lenses as both a display device and a biomedical sensor back when he was still a professor. Parviz surprised many with a move to Amazon last summer, and is in charge of a project that is being kept under wraps at this point. Whatever his new project is, it is likely to be something that will make more people aware of the name Babak Parviz. Parviz is also a keynote speaker at MD&M West, which is co-located with Pacific Design & Manufacturing. He will be speaking about the future of wearable technology.

    In addition, Design News will be presenting an award to the Rising Engineering Star, Manish Bhardwaj, a systems application engineer with Texas Instruments. Bhardwaj, 30, has contributed to the development of a software-based frequency response analyzer for power conversion systems and a reference design for motor control systems. He has also been involved in several solar power developments. The Rising Engineering Star award has been presented for the past three years, in partnership with Mouser Electronics.

    Another award, Gadget Freak of the Year, will be presented to a group of Colorado State University engineering students, who devised a DDV-IP, a robotic remote-controlled drink delivery vehicle. What started as a school project for Doug Swift, Tyler Reedy, Rob Harvey, and Michael Habel, went beyond the class time, but they continued until it all worked.     All of these awards will be presented on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, adjacent to the Anaheim Convention Center, at 5 p.m., in the Platinum 5 Ballroom.

  • UBM Canon in Partnership with Science@OC to Support STEM Education in Southern California

    STEM Education Day to be held at UBM Canon Advanced Manufacturing Trade Show, Feb 10, 2015 at Anaheim Convention Center

    Santa Monica, CA (January 26, 2015) – UBM Canon and Science@OC have announced their 2015 partnership to promote education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). This will mark the second of a three-year collaboration.  The partnership will also include a STEM Education Day on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at UBM Canon’s Advanced Manufacturing Trade Show at the Anaheim Convention Center next month.

    The collaboration is designed to help educators better understand the quality and vast array of career opportunities available to students who have the math and science skills required by Orange County manufacturers. The program is a part of a long-term approach to address a chronic challenge faced by Orange County manufacturers: finding qualified workers.

    “Science@OC is using a grant from the UBM Foundation to send 25 middle school educators from six Orange County school districts to the exposition and conference,” said Science@OC Executive Director Sue Neuen. “Educators will take a guided tour of the exhibit hall and discuss how to best share these experiences with students and their parents. We believe that educators need to start promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education early to inspire students to be qualified for high paying jobs for the next generation of local manufacturing workers.”

    Middle school teachers who attended the STEM Education Day at the advanced manufacturing trade event in 2014 were surprised by the sheer number of technology and manufacturing companies exhibiting at the event as well as the number of them who told the visiting teachers that they are starved for qualified applicants for their jobs.

    The Southern California Advanced Manufacturing Trade Show, scheduled for February 10-12, 2015, is the largest comprehensive manufacturing exposition and professional development conference on the West Coast.It is an ideal location to provide the connection between educators and manufacturers. The event attracts more than 30,000 participants and includes more than 2,000 exhibits of equipment, products and services in manufacturing, with the following co-located events: Pacific Design & Manufacturing, ATX West, MD&M West, Quality Expo, WestPack, PLASTEC West, Electronics West, and AeroCon.

  • ASQ to Join Forces with UBM Canon Events for 2015

    Integrated Quality Management Trainings to be Offered at Six Trade Events

    Santa Monica, CA (January 21, 2015) – ASQ, the American Society for Quality, has signed an agreement with UBM Canon to present intensive one-day and two-day trainings on quality processes and management at six UBM Canon trade events in 2015. The first of these will be at the largest advanced manufacturing event in the country, taking place February 10-12, 2015 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

    “Partnering with UBM Canon just makes sense for ASQ as quality is a vital aspect of the manufacturing industry,” added Annemieke Hytinen, PMP, CMQ/OE Manager, Manufacturing Market & Business Development Manager, ASQ. “ASQ is the leading authority on quality in all fields, organizations and industries.”

    In addition to the Anaheim event, two-day Integrated Quality Management trainings will be conducted at the UBM Canon events, in New York June 9-11, and in Toronto June 16-18 . These sessions will familiarize participants with the latest tools and techniques for monitoring and managing best practices in the workplace. Trainings will also assist attendees in developing a draft action plan to apply to their operations. Those who complete the course will receive 1.40 CEUs (Continuing Education Units).

  • Scott Schulman

    Scott Schulman was appointed CEO of UBM Americas in March 2016.

    He has spent more than 25 years in the information, media and business services industries, as a leader of global businesses and consultant/advisor to many of the world’s most successful and innovative companies.

    Most recently, as President of Rodale, he led a transformation of the health and wellness media company to drive global growth in digital sites, mobile tools and new product launches. This work tripled digital profits in 2 years through increased traffic, better monetization, partnerships and a new unified digital platform.  He and the team also launched innovative new products in paid online courses, mobile tools, a new digital video network and branded e-commerce stores.  He led an expansion of live events and the company’s international footprint and established the foundation for new business models in B2B employee wellness; product licensing, premium content offerings and television shows.

    Prior to this, Scott spent 13 years at Dow Jones & Company, where he served in a series of operating roles in which he drove new strategies and product solutions to provide customers with critical information to help them conduct their business. These businesses helped connect businesspeople to commercial opportunities, networks, people and investments.  In all of these roles, Scott led the business operations as well as the content and editorial areas.  He has a track record of driving top- and bottom-line growth by developing new market segments, expanding into global markets and creating digital business models.

    He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

  • Brian Field

    Brian Field is Chief Operating Officer of UBM Connect, overseeing product, technology, production and marketing for UBM Connect’s overall business.   Brian has overseen large-scale multimedia product launches and migrations, leading-edge data profiling initiatives and business development efforts.

    He has further experience in traditional broadcast media and leveraging broadcast to benefit digital product in his experience working as the COO of the New Products Group at Turner Broadcasting.

    Brian has had several leadership positions at Omnicom, VOY and StarMedia, where his marketing, deal-making and financial modeling experience were utilized along side of his team building, operations and product skills.  Brian holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, a M.M. from The Juilliard School, and a B.A. (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Connecticut College.

  • David Cox

    David Cox is Chief Financial Officer for UBM Americas.

    Prior to joining UBM, David spent over 20 years with The Economist Group working across the globe in both Finance and broader commercial roles.  Beginning his career in Internal Audit, he spent three years in Vienna, Austria running the Economist Intelligence Unit’s East European business before moving to New York to manage the Group’s shared services function. He went on to lead and develop Economist Events globally from New York for several years, building experience in industry, functional and government focused events.

    Most recently he was the SVP & CFO of the Global Media Businesses for The Economist which includes content marketing, events, research and advertising.

    David holds a BA (Hons) in Business Studies from the University of Coventry and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ACA) with Deloitte & Touche in London.   He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Board Member of British American Business.

    He lives in Westchester with his wife (Laurie) and his three sons.

    Lori was appointed Managing Director of UBM’s Advanced Manufacturing business in November 2015 overseeing the operational, P&L and strategic direction of the business. Prior to that appointment, Lori was EVP of North America Event Operations and Services where she focused on developing best practices across UBM North America events. Lori joined UBM in 1989 and held a number of progressively senior positions with UBM. Prior to joining UBM, Lori was a staff accountant for a small, woman owned business focused on providing accounting and financial services to small businesses in manufacturing, technology and trade show industries.
